How to Grow Your Remodeling Business

Show your entire remodeling process, let the client see your value.

Let’s suppose that you’re remodeling a kitchen for a client. Maybe you’re making a video for your YouTube channel that you wish to attract more subscribers on.

The point is that each and every step of your remodeling process is so important to be documented for business purposes. Whether you’re a professional home remodeler or a home improvement amateur. We could all use a handy tool to help us record the extraordinary work during our projects.

The best way to show your remodeling process

The video not only helps the clients to understand your craftsmanship but also helps your business grow. Moreover, time-lapse is the best way to turn your experience into a short video.

Creative Spiral shares a great example that shows how they record their remodeling process in time lapse. You or the client can see how they been taking care of their house and every step of the process.

Thanks to time-lapse, remodelers can show their entire process of work much faster and easier. However, not all digital cameras offer time lapse function. Plus, most of the digital/action cameras on the market offer less than an hour battery life recording time.

The best tool to help you record time-lapse videos

TLC120 is the pocketable size time lapse camera. Moreover, depends on how you set the camera, it records up to 10 days with just a single charge. With HDR sensor, the camera takes great time lapse videos in low light situation, like indoor situation. You can customize the camera settings to make it more professional. TLC120 produce a complete time lapse video without editing, like using your smartphone. It is designed to help your storytelling better.

Content Creator Spotlight: Brinno User, Support Guru, Now Retailer!

There is one name synonymous with Brinno time lapse cameras in North America, Josh Banks.

Since purchasing his first camera in 2013, this guy has done it all and shows no signs of slowing down with his latest Brinno venture, aptly named TimeLapseCameras.com

We noticed Josh’s first video, an extensive seven month project, days after he uploaded the video to YouTube our Social Media Manager reached out and put Josh in contact with the President of our US Distributor. Since then, there has been no looking back. Josh has been involved with high level customer care, helping user’s worldwide. Josh has visited Brinno in Taiwan, participated in camera development and marketing initiatives, toured factories and made friends with the core people within our great company. Josh has represented Brinno at major trade shows including the Consumer Electronics and International Builder’s Shows. Josh has also trained major retailer sales teams. He continues to create content and build brand awareness by constantly expanding his collection of engaging and unique videos.

We wanted to dig into the inner workings of Josh’s brain and learn from his perspective.

1) Tell us about TimeLapseCameras.com?

I am pouring all of my efforts into making TimeLapseCameras.com the one source for accurate Brinno camera information. Handling customer care for a few years became frustrating, as I would typically hear from someone too late. I had many instances where customer education would have made all the difference between a successful project and disappointment.

Creating a long term time lapse requires some prediction of the future and there are some concepts people should take into consideration before starting their recording. At TimeLapseCameras.com our emphasis is helping the customer from start to finish. We want to talk to the customer, make product suggestions and we even offer to set up each camera specifically for their project. We know what works and what doesn’t, from basic clamp selection to camera settings. Everyone who contacts us ends up with the confidence their project will work out. There is no other retailer who can offer the knowledge  we are willing to share.

We are working on expanding our services. We now offer solutions to improve video footage and we are working on various levels of editing services. The web site will continue to expand with new tutorials, case studies and more.

2) Are there any tips you would like to share with everyone?

Sure, the question is where do I start? Compared to other solutions, Brinno cameras are quite inexpensive. I always suggest at least two cameras for a long term construction project. Both cameras can run side-by-side or at different perspectives for exterior work. Once work begins indoors, one of the cameras can capture interior action. Two cameras provide redundancy, an exterior build only happens once and all it takes is a bird doing it’s business on the housing to wreck a great video. Things happen, although rarely, two cameras lessen the chance of tragic loss.

Another tip would be to consider the timer settings to eliminate dark portions of a day. Videos which flash from dark to light rapidly can be difficult to watch. Many people want to record from 6am to 6pm, in some areas, especially during winter, it is dark at 6am and 6pm. I would rather go with 8am to 4pm if it means consistent light. You will end up wanting to edit dark portions and it’s much easier to handle this before recording than after.

There are so many other tips running through my head. Check the settings, make sure the Quality is on Best, Frame Rate is at 30 FPS and the Time/Date Stamp is Off.

One more… Brinno.com has a great time lapse calculator, visit the site and select Support | Time Setting Calculator to run through some variables.

3) What did you learn on your visits to Taiwan?

Taiwan is a beautiful country, a totally different experience for me. Everything I knew about food completely changed in Taiwan, it was truly a unique culinary experience. Sustained 180 mph on high speed rail is amazing and I could go on about the tourist experience.

However, Taiwan was getting to know Brinno, the company, the people and most of all being involved in discussions which shaped future products. There are great people in this company, I have met everyone from the CEO to factory workers and I greatly admire their passion and work ethic. Taiwan was an opportunity to socialize in their environment, ride in their cars, share meals and tour the country with Brinno employees.

I really look forward to new camera development and I feel many of my suggestions could result in a camera for the masses in the construction industry. I also look forward to vising Taiwan again and bringing The TimeLapseCameras.com team to share the experience.

4) How did you get your start creating time lapse videos?

I thought you only had three questions. I am a professional photographer, I do a considerable amount of work for a public utility in my area. In 2013 they wanted to do a time lapse of a water reservoir construction shot from the top of a water tower.

I started looking for a solution. There were very expensive construction cameras, DIY ideas and some other solutions which may or may not work. I ran across a Brinno camera on a major retail web site and after some consideration I decided a Brinno may work. I presented the option to the utility and asked  them sign liability wavers if it didn’t work out. My first Brinno was purchased and installed. At first, I climbed the water tower weekly to check the camera, yep it was working. Weekly turned into every other and eventually every other month until the project was complete.

With the help of a video editor friend we uploaded the a first version of the video to YouTube. Within two days I was contacted by Brinno’s Social Media manager and they wanted to discuss the video in detail. Come to find out, this was one of the first long term construction videos created with a Brinno camera, I was essentially discovered online and I couldn’t be more grateful.

5) What is the future of time lapse?

The future of time lapse is still in the early stages due to lack of awareness inexpensive technology exists. Every contractor, builder, sub-contractor worldwide should have a Brinno time lapse camera or two. Time lapse is the perfect way to show your work from start to finish. For around $200 a landscaper can show a property transformed, a painter can show a house transition from white to gray, a pool installer can show bare land become an oasis, a builder can show someones dream become a reality. Everyone can use time lapse, in some way, to promote their business.

Time lapse videos are great for social media, Facebook, web sites and trade shows. People watch just to see what unfolds.

6) Lastly, what are your favorite time lapse accomplishments?

It’s hard to pick favorites, each video was created for a reason. I have a friend who is a Captain for a major airline and I got a camera into a cockpit for an unprecedented and perfect landing at O’Hare. With over 300,000 views this may be one of the most popular Brinno videos on YouTube.

Another is a McDonald’s construction video. I wanted a time lapse everyone could relate to, what better than a McDonald’s restaurant. I frequently use this as a construction example, everything from multiple cameras to interior views is covered and this video often answers questions regarding camera distance, time interval and more. It’s a great video for people to understand the concept of long term time lapse.

I also like the Brinno cameras for creative use, driving time lapse, sunsets, cityscapes, etc. However, one creative area I really enjoy is 3D printing. 3D prints can take many hours and a Brinno camera is a perfect solution to document an entire project.

Josh and TimeLapseCameras.com are great resources for anyone considering a long term time lapse project. We are proud of his accomplishments and look forward to anything this guy does or has to say.

Brinno’s Indoor Cherry Blossoms In Time Lapse

38388_japan

Every spring, millions of tourists flock to Japan to witness the iconic cherry blossoms, or Sakura as they are known. Hanami is an annual Japanese celebration of the fleeting beauty of flowers, in particular, the stunning splendor of the Sakura.  Hanami is all about appreciating the simple pleasure of stopping to view the beautiful spring cherry blossoms.

Each year, thousands of people gather at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Tokyo, to picnic and celebrate under blooming cherry blossom trees.

In honor of this delightful tradition, Brinno has created a miniaturized celebration of Hanami.  Set in front of iconic Mt. Fuji, we used miniature “magic Sakura trees”, cardboard cutouts that “flower” crystals to represent the majestic Sakura tree. The cute animal characters signify a crowd gathering around the trees in appreciation of the flowering trees. Brinno documented the pink magic tree’s twelve hours of growth with their time lapse cameras, TLC120 and TLC200Pro, to show the interesting experiment in less than a minute.

Sculpting Durotan In Time Lapse

Sculpting a masterpiece from start to finishing, it indeed is a long journey whether to the sculptor or the viewer. The beauty of a sculpture is not only the finished piece but the work and sweat throughout the process. Time lapse plays an important role in the process of creation.

More and more artist started to document their creation process by using a time-lapse camera. It allows you to speed up the process and watchable for your viewers, customers, or yourself.

Here is an example.

Durotan is the character name of the sculpture. It is one of the famous characters in the  Warcraft film.

The Best Brinno Time-lapse Videos!

People always ask “What are your favorite time-lapse videos made with Brinno Cameras?” As the Social Media Manager for three years I think i’ve seen them all (probably multiple times!) and I do have some favorites. So this is a compilation of some of the most popular time-lapse cameras made with various/multiple Brinno Cameras.

The BCC100 Construction Camera operates on long-lasting batteries. 4 AA batteries can last up to 4 months. You never need to worry about finding a power outlet! Put away that DSLR and pick up the most important thing you can use to show your clients progression, value and the quality of your work.  Here are three of the best that represent those year long commercial projects.

Josh Banks made an excellent time-lapse video in his hometown of Rochester, Minnesota for Rochester Public Utilities. This was his first video and was a five month project. His second effort was a McDonald’s Restaurant build from beginning to end.

The TLC200 Pro HDR Time Lapse Video Camera performs time-lapse photography and instantly creates HD videos at 1280 x 720 resolution from the captured still images. No stitching or other post-processing is required. Choose a time interval of 0.3 sec or select one of many intervals from 1 sec – 24 hr to see change over time, whether you’re recording events, projects or the natural world. There’s also a setting for shooting 3-5 photos in 1 sec. Videos are compressed into smaller files for easy playback on smart devices.

There are so many great time-lapse moments that have been captured with these cameras!

This video is of the largest continuous mat foundation pour in the history of Philadelphia and was captured on July 10, 2016 by a team led by Tutor Perini. The timelapsing of the project was of the W/Element Hotel currently scheduled to open in 2017.

Michael Lohr has become a phenomenal user of the PRO. This video of horses in his home state of Colorado is fun and a perfect time-lapse moment!

We have two videos from Abu Wei who somehow manages to capture the beauty of Taiwan and the opening of a Cactus Flower with ease. Who knew that time-lapse video would be an easy, inexpensive way to be creative with video?

There are so many others including THIS our most popular video (to date.) I will be adding more posts like this to showcase all of the wonderful creativity that I see with our cameras.

The ART200 Rotating Camera Base makes panlapse easy! It can be used with our cameras, a gopro, smartphone of 4/3 camera.

TimeLAX is two brothers obsessed with time-lapse video, pushing boundaries and layering the ir footage to create stunning videos. We are so lucky that they found the ART200 and decided to use it in their latest video on California’s Silicon Beaches.

There you have it! A few of our favorites, lots we didn’t have room to add and hoping that our amazing contributors continue to create smart, fun and interesting time-lapse videos.
