By detecting motion through the peephole, and recording whomever approaches the door, there is nothing on the outside of the door to indicate that the Peephole is now a motion activated camera, so no one is going to damage it or cover it up, like they might if they noticed a motion detection unit outside the door.
Automatically storing time and date stamped photos or videos give you a video log of any and all visitors, whether or not you are home, which can be played back on the display with the push of a button. 9,000 triggers is a lot of visitors, and more than three times the battery life of earlier versions. If you were to receive 10 visitors a day, the batteries would last over 6 months.

“Five years ago Brinno released the first Digital Peephole Viewer the PHV1325. Prior to its release, the only option for people was a standard security camera above the door, which needed to be part of a $1,000 system, or some $500.00 door video call box with a display which both needed external power. Now, for the first time there was a battery operated solution below $150.00 that was easy to install and operate.
This must have touched a nerve because copy products by the hundreds showed up, most of them out of Shenzhen, China. I was living there at the time, so I saw many of them up close. Of course, the defining difference between all these products and Brinno, was that Brinno actually used the peephole lenses and used software to flatten the fish eye effect you get with peepholes.
All of the pretenders placed cameras on the outside of the peephole and ran cables back to the display inside the door. Hard to install and flaky at best. Within a few months, 90% of these products were off the market, and the Shenzhen companies were copying something new and Brinno was busy designing the next version, and expanding its distribution worldwide.
The release of the third generation of the product, the Brinno PHVMAC reminded me that reinvesting in the technology and developing better products is critical to success as is expanding distribution. However, in retrospect, perhaps the most important decision we made was to not panic, and try to drop our price to match these “pretender products”, but keep to our plan and sell on better quality and better functionality, and better service.
Five years later the competitive landscape is littered with the “pretenders” and Brinno now sells three versions worldwide. ”
